on: May 22, 2004, 08:02:42 AM
Except for this forum, I dont really spend too much time on the internet...as a result, sometimes on the forum I read some internet acronym, and dont know what it means.  Let's make a thread- like a list of internet slang, so poor saps like me dont get confused..

Ok, Ill get us started:

lol: laugh out loud
roflaf: rolling on floor laughing ass off
what: what the ____
-------------------------
ok, that's all I know... I know there more, lets hear them!

I didn't know the FWIW for a long time.  It's the acronym for "for what it's worth".  Lame in internet lingo, lame in actual verbal usage. :P

I forgot the most important one of all....

IIDGOOTFMBIGTFM!!!= If I don't get out of this forum my boss is going to fire me!!!
hahaha ;D ;D ;D

no I don't have a list, I am at work right now and these are from a list of terms frequently used by traders in the stock market....hey I bet musically, there would be a whole different goup like,
p=soft
f=loud
>=accent, etc..  Might be fun to see how many "musically themed" we could come up with, however to be perfectly honest I prefer just using
good ol' regular English, even if it means typing alittle
longer. I'm not one of those computer wiz's anyway, if I can plug one in, I'm having a good day! ;)

in my honest opinion
for what it's worth

Does anyone else think that even in actual conversation, these phrases are completely useless?  And they make the person who says them seem really stupid, like they couldn't form words together on their own so they rely on simple cliched phrases.  I'm glad I live in a place that is rather quick to the point.

For what it's worth, I don't speak like that.  In my honest opinion, people who use these phrases are idiots.

Actually, the normal teenagers-the ones who listen to bad pop, don't like school but still get good grades, go shopping at AF and AE (bleaurgh), etc-have no idea what 1337 is. Actually, most "popular" (referring to the ditzy, overexposing girls and jock-like boys) kids have no idea what 1337 is besides it being a number.

People who do know it are either very internet-comfy, usually playing strategy card games, doing HTML, intellegent (sp), instrument playing, non-athletic, etc..

Ive been reading your past few posts, Squinchy, and you seem very cynical about everything involving other people.  You like to catagorize people into groups- these are the dumb skateboarders, these are the captains of the the chess team, etc..

Frankly, I agree with you and everything you have said so far! ;D (smug smile)

If there is a physical state that is a hybrid of "coldsweatypalms" and "warmfuzzychills," I have just felt it.

What does cynical mean, anyway? Reading about Greek philosophers didn't help me understand much..I associate it with sarcasm, but I don't think that's right.

One reason I might be so "cynical" about things involving other people is that other people don't think I'm a person-they think I'm a robot who has no feelings, is incapable of laughing, and has infinite ability to chug facts, help others study, be musical, bubble in stuff and get a 1470, et cetera.

..but back on topic (and enough depressing stuff about me..)..

Some people use "tyvm" or "tym" to say "thank you very much" or "thank you muchly."

Yes, that's the stuff!!! I love it.  Very cynical!! ;D

To be cynical is to have a disposition in life where you dont trust anyone, even yourself, and believe everything we see is fake.  A cynic will be very sarcastic and is usually very difficult to get along with.  You dont understand the people surrounding you, and as a result, you develop ideas about them that make you resent them more and more everyday..

Im just like you.  I believe people in general are very stupid.  Policticians are, in general, very VERY stupid.  The only reason why people would vote for them is if they can relate to them.  I dont know where you live...U.S.?  I believe George Bush is a redneck who does a fine job of symbolizing every redneck in the US.
(good thing this is the internet, or I would have angry rednecks chasing me with garden hoses.. ;))
