A Dizzying Chromatic Ride
Rimsky-Korsakov’s most famous piece is the tiny interlude that occurs at the end of act three of the opera “Tsar Saltan.” We hear you ask, “What opera?” and, “I’ve never heard of it.” Well, the interlude is the “Flight of the Bumblebee.” Everyone knows that one! In the opera, the wizard turns the tsar’s son into the bumblebee so that he can escape to rejoin his father, who thinks he’s dead. Rachmaninoff takes this piece and arranges it for piano most successfully. It flashes by in only two minutes.
